Questions

Why is the job market so bad in 2026?

Companies are hiring far less. The US hiring rate was 3.2% in July 2026, down from a 3.9% average in 2019, while unemployment was 4.1% in August. Entry-level roles took the biggest hit: new grad hiring at big tech is down about 65% from 2019, software development postings on Indeed are 26% below February 2020, and recent college graduates face 5.6% unemployment.

How long does it take to find a job in 2026?

The median unemployed person in the US had been out of work for 11.4 weeks in August 2026, up from 9.9 weeks a year earlier and 8.7 weeks in August 2019.

Is it easier to start a business than to get a job?

Not easier, but far more people are doing it. Americans filed 5.67M business applications in 2025, the most on record and 62% more than in 2019. Only 8.8% of them planned to pay wages, so most are one-person businesses. Revenue is modest too: among 941 startups with Stripe-verified revenue on TrustMRR, the median makes $2,310 a month.
